Beautiful skin is never about chasing trends. It’s about understanding what your skin needs at each stage of life and giving it the expert care it deserves.

Every decade brings subtle changes, from hormonal shifts to the way your face naturally reshapes. When you work with these changes rather than against them, your skin stays fresh, radiant, and unmistakably you.

To help guide the way, we asked Dr Harpreet, aesthetic practitioner at our Southwell clinic, to share her decade-by-decade recommendations. Dr Harpreet brings a wealth of clinical knowledge and hands-on expertise, specialising in injectable fillers, advanced skin treatments, and aesthetic treatments that enhance natural beauty.

Consider it your ultimate roadmap to glowing, healthy skin — no guesswork required!

Your 20s: Protect, Preserve, Perfect

Your twenties are when skin is functionally at its peak.

With a dermis rich in collagen and elastin, it feels supple, smooth and beautifully resilient — effortlessly bouncing back from late nights, stress, or the occasional sun exposure. Static lines are barely on the radar, and pigmentation is uncommon unless influenced by significant hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, or prolonged UV exposure.

Yet, much of the sun damage, pigmentation and deeper lines we treat later in life often begin in these formative years. The habits and care you establish now will pay dividends for decades to come!

Priorities in your 20s:

  • Daily SPF – essential, even on cloudy days or in winter. Our favourite recommendation is SVR Sun Secure, available at the clinic or via our team.
  • Antioxidants – powerful protectors that shield skin from environmental stressors.
  • High-quality, medical-grade skincare – the right products help maintain the skin’s natural resilience and delay the need for injectables. Our practitioners can advise on the perfect routine, and skincare can be purchased at the clinic.

Your 30s: Collagen Enters the Conversation

In your thirties, collagen loss quietly enters the scene. You may notice fine lines appearing in dynamic areas like the forehead and around the eyes, early volume loss in the midface, or a slight dullness and slower skin recovery.

The focus remains preventative — but we become more proactive.

Skincare upgrades

This is the decade to be consistent with :

  • Retinol – a key skincare ingredient to stimulate collagen production and enhance cell turnover.
  • In-clinic treatments – To complement your at-home routine and boost results, in-clinic treatments such as chemical peels and microneedling help stimulate collagen production, boost cell renewal, and maintain that healthy, radiant glow.

Preventative injectables

We may also recommend subtle, regenerative treatments to support your skin’s structure and longevity:

  • Profhilo® for deep hydration and skin quality. Profhilo® gradually stimulates collagen and elastin production. Ideal for the face, neck, and décolletage, downtime is minimal, and a course of two treatments delivers optimal results.
  • Polynucleotides to support cellular repair, skin structure, firmness and texture. A series of micro-injections are applied in targeted areas, creating small bumps which usually settle within 24 hours. For optimal results, our team recommends a course of three treatments to improve the appearance of fine lines and healthier skin.
  • Small, precisely placed hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal filler to subtly address early volume loss, and prevent the need for more transformative treatments later down the line. Our practitioners will assess which areas will need targeting. HA fillers provide immediate, natural-looking hydration and structural support.

The goal here is refinement, not transformation. Small, considered adjustments now often mean fewer, less invasive treatments are needed down the line.

Your 40s: Restore Structure, Rebuild Support

In your forties, collagen and elastin loss are becoming more pronounced, and those static lines you’ve been avoiding start to settle.

Volume loss in the midface becomes more noticeable, which can make tear troughs appear deeper and the face feel flatter. Hormonal shifts associated with perimenopause may also increase skin sensitivity, flushing, broken thread veins and irritation.

This decade calls for a more structural approach. Youthful faces hold most volume in the upper and midface, tapering gradually downwards. In your forties, we focus on re-establishing this natural distribution — never overfilling, always responding to your natural anatomy.

Advanced skin regeneration

Now it’s time to give your skin a little extra love with treatments that work harder to replenish lost collagen:

  • Deeper chemical peels to treat wrinkles, sun damage and scarring. Recovery time may last up to 2 weeks and involve mild swelling, peeling and strict sun avoidance. The results? Long-lasting improvements to skin tightness and texture.
  • Microneedling with exosomes to repair DNA damage and stimulate regeneration. This highly effective treatment is reflective in results – reduced acne scars, wrinkles and pigmentation.
  • Polynucleotides working synergistically with exosomes to improve cellular function. This injectable treatment repairs, rejuvenates and tightens the skin.

The aim is not just cosmetic improvement, but long-term skin health and collagen support.

Your 50s: Precision, Lifting & Barrier Support

Menopause accentuates many changes that began in your forties. Notice your skin feeling a little drier, more sensitive, or less resilient than before?

Pigmentation often becomes more pronounced unless previously treated, presenting as sun spots or ‘solar lentigos’. Volume loss also shifts downward, which can lead to:

  • Deeper nasolabial folds
  • Downturned mouth corners
  • Less defined jawline
  • Jowling

Barrier-first skincare

At this stage, protecting and supporting the skin barrier is essential. Gentle, yet effective, exfoliating ingredients help remove dead cells without stripping moisture. At STORY Clinics, we recommend trusted, medical-grade skincare tailored to your skin’s needs — available at the clinic.

Pigmentation solutions

Lumecca IPL can effectively target sun spots, freckles, pigmentation and redness. Most patients notice an improvement after 1-2 sessions, with indicators that their skin is smoother, brighter and skin tone is improved. Available exclusively at our Marylebone clinic, this laser treatment is a fast, non-invasive option.

Skincare products with tyrosinase inhibitors may also be recommended by our team. They work beneath the surface to prevent dark spots and sun damage from taking hold, keeping your complexion smoother, brighter, and beautifully balanced.

Structural rejuvenation

Improving facial volume with HA filler restores support where it has diminished. In this decade, technique is everything — subtle enhancement ensures harmony across your features.

Biostimulatory fillers can also improve skin laxity and stimulate collagen production, particularly in the lower face.

Energy-based treatments such as NeoGen address both texture and laxity, by triggering collagen and elastin production. NeoGen is one of our latest additions at STORY Clinics Southwell – an advanced, non-invasive treatment that uses plasma technology to regenerate skin on the face and neck. The result is lift, refinement and long-lasting skin improvements. Known for it’s brilliant results, this treatment works beautifully on its own or in combination with other treatments, such as fillers or regenerative treatments. Our recent NeoGen blog explains everything you need to know.

Your 60s: Multimodal, Measured, Beautifully Balanced

By your sixties, menopausal fluctuations often stabilise. Skin may feel drier and less elastic, but with the right care, it can look exceptionally healthy.

This is the decade of multimodal treatment planning to address every layer of the face. A cohesive skin plan supports skin quality, structure and regeneration together.

Skin Quality: Hydration & Renewal

Mature skin needs intelligent hydration, not just heavier creams.

We prioritise advanced, hydration-focused skincare that strengthens the barrier while drawing moisture into the skin. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and gentle humectants help restore comfort and smoothness without overwhelming the skin.

At the same time, cell turnover naturally slows in your 60s, which can lead to dullness and uneven tone. Carefully selected ingredients, such as retinoids or mild chemical exfoliants help encourage healthy renewal. The aim is refinement, not irritation.

To enhance these results from within, polynucleotides and Profhilo® are great additions.

  • Polynucleotides encourages the skin to repair and regenerate more effectively.
  • Profhilo® delivers deep hydration while stimulating collagen and elastin production, improving firmness and glow without adding volume.

Together, they improve elasticity, texture and luminosity in a way that feels subtle and natural.

Structural & Regenerative Support

Ageing in your 60s isn’t just about lines — it’s about structural change.

There is gradual loss in fat compartments, weakening of ligaments and changes in bone support. This can create deeper folds or a sense of heaviness in the lower face.

Subtle, precisely placed HA filler can soften deeper creases or skin folds while restoring gentle support. Biostimulatory fillers and energy-based treatments work in deeper layers to stimulate collagen production and improve skin tightness over time.

In your 60s, the goal is simple: skin that looks healthy, supported and entirely your own.
