At STORY Clinics, we believe beauty treatments should never be about changing who you are. Instead, they should enhance what you already have in a way that feels natural and true to your identity. For many of our patients, lip fillers are a simple yet transformative treatment—helping restore lost volume, define shape, or add a little extra fullness.
If you are thinking about lip fillers but aren’t sure where to start, you’re in the right place. This guide covers the most common questions we hear, including how long lip filler lasts, whether it’s painful, what to expect during treatment, downtime and aftercare.
Understanding Lip Fillers
Lip filler treatments use hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance naturally present in the body that maintains hydration and plumpness in the skin. When injected into the lips, the HA filler can restore youthful volume, address asymmetry, and smooth out fine lines. At STORY, we only use premium HA fillers like Juvederm and Revanesse, that are specifically designed to create natural-looking and long-lasting results.
Lip Treatment Process
Your First Step: The Consultation
Before any treatment, you’ll sit down with one of our Level 7 qualified aesthetic doctors for a thorough consultation. This is a chance to share what you’d like to achieve and to ask any questions.
During this appointment, we’ll look at:
- The natural proportions of your lips.
- Your skin condition and medical history
- Your goals—whether that’s subtle volume or more definition
- Which filler type and technique will best suit you
Think of this stage as co-creating your treatment plan. We’ll always advise you with transparency, and if we think a different approach would work better for your features, lifestyle and goals – we’ll advise accordingly.
We also allow enough time in your consultation for treatment to go ahead on the same day, if you decide you’d like to and your doctor feels it’s appropriate.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
After your consultation, a typical lip filler appointment at STORY Clinics takes around 30–45 minutes. During this time, you can expect:
- Preparation – we’ll clean the area, mark key points, and apply numbing cream before injecting to make sure you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your treatment. At this stage, we’ll also take clear pre-treatment photos. These are an important part of your journey, giving you a record of your starting point.
- Treatment – your medical practitioner will then inject the filler carefully and precisely using either a fine needle or a cannula, depending on what’s best for your lips and comfort.
- Review – we’ll check symmetry, gently massage the area, ensure you are happy with the results, and make any final tweaks if needed. After photos are also taken, again, to track progress and refer to for your following visits.
Seeing real results can make all the difference when considering a treatment. Before and after photos help others visualise outcomes and feel confident in their choices. At STORY Clinics, patients can choose to consent to marketing, allowing us to share their before and after photos—always respectfully—on platforms like Instagram. If you prefer to remain anonymous, we can carefully crop images to protect your privacy.
Aftercare and Recovery
Looking after your lips properly helps ensure a smooth recovery and optimal results. Swelling, bruising and tenderness after your lip filler treatment is completely normal, but temporary with final results visible after 2-4 weeks. Keep in mind that more mature or ageing skin may bruise more easily due to increased fragility.
Your practitioner will schedule a review appointment 2-4 weeks after your treatment. In the meantime, immediately after your lip filler treatment, make sure to:
- Avoid touching or pressing the treated area for at least 24 hours to prevent infection.
- Don’t apply make-up on the treated area for 24 hours.
- Skip alcohol, vigorous exercise, saunas and hot baths for 24-48 hours. Certain activities can increase blood flow to the face, impacting recovery.
- Stay well-hydrated.
- Avoid Aspirin and Ibuprofen, as these can increase bruising
- Don’t fly for at least one week, ideally two weeks after treatment. To protect your results, we recommend avoiding massaging the area, facial treatments, and unclean pillowcases during the healing process.
- Follow post-treatment instructions provided by your practitioner for the best results.
For further information on post-treatment recovery, patients can read our aftercare advice page which also covers treatments such as wrinkle reduction, dermal filler treatments and skin treatments (including injectables).
We Answer Your Lip Filler Questions
How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
One of the most common questions asked is how long the results will last. On average, lip fillers last between six to twelve months. The exact timing depends on several factors: the type of filler used, individual metabolism, and lifestyle factors.
To preserve your results, we may recommend follow-up treatments.
What’s the Best Age for Lip Fillers?
There isn’t a “best age.” The right time to consider lip fillers depends entirely on your goals. Some people in their 20s choose them to add volume or create a more defined look. Others wait until their 30s, 40s, or later, when natural ageing has caused loss of volume, thinning or fine lines.
At STORY, our approach is the same regardless of age – we take time to understand what you’re hoping to achieve and create a plan that complements your unique features. Lip fillers can look beautiful at any age when done with care and precision.
Please note that our clinic does not provide injectable treatments to anyone under 21 years old.
Is Lip Filler Painful?
Understandably, many people are nervous about discomfort. While lip fillers aren’t completely pain-free, most patients describe the feeling as a quick pinch or pressure, not intense pain. We apply numbing cream beforehand, and the filler itself contains local anaesthetic to reduce sensitivity.
After treatment, you may feel a little sore and tender. So, how long do your lips feel tender after filler? For most people, any discomfort and initial swelling subsides after a couple of days. The lips have lots of blood vessels, so there may also be some bruising. Remember – it’s best to have lip fillers at least 4 weeks before any big events.
Are Lip Fillers Only for Women?
Not at all. While female patients often ask for extra plumpness or definition, men usually prefer subtle improvements that preserve a masculine aesthetic. This might include restoring lost volume, correcting asymmetry, or smoothing lines without making the lips look “done.”
At STORY Clinics, treatments for men are designed to look natural and understated. The goal is not to feminise but to enhance. Every face is different, and our doctors adapt their approach to suit your features, gender identity, and personal goals.
What Happens if I Change my Mind After Having the Treatment?
One of the reassurances about lip fillers is that they are not permanent. The filler can be safely dissolved if you decide the look isn’t right for you. However, the key point here is you’re never locked into a decision and consulted fully before any treatment.
At STORY Clinics, we also take a “less is more” approach, particularly for first-time patients. We often recommend starting with a smaller amount of filler so you can get used to the look and feel before deciding whether you’d like more. That way, you stay in control of your results every step of the way.
