Aesthetics specialist Dr Kalpna Pindolia of STORY Marylebone answers one of our frequently asked lip augmentation questions: lip filler or a lip flip, which is best for fuller lips?
Lip augmentation is great for beautification and restoring volume. What many people don’t realise is, there are alternative options for creating your perfect pout…
Two of the most well-known and popular treatments are lip filler and a lip flip.
These lip enhancements are both injectables but involve different products and different techniques. They also provide different outcomes.
What does lip filler do?
Lip filler is a smooth hyaluronic acid-based solution that adds volume to the lips.
Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in our bodies and is known for its incredible hydrating properties; you’ll likely use it in your skincare for this reason.
STORY doctors use just the right amount of premium lip fillers to plump the lips, adding or restoring volume, to create a beautiful look and shape that moves naturally.
This is especially effective if you feel your lips have become smaller with age, which is very common.
Lip filler results last for 6 to 12 months, on average.
Too Long; Didn’t Read (TL;DR): Lip fillers use hyaluronic acid to add volume and create fuller lips that last for up to 12 months.
Does a lip flip add volume?
A lip flip treatment gives the appearance of fuller lips but does not add volume. It doesn’t involve dermal fillers either. Instead, this subtle and clever little tweakment involves the careful use of wrinkle reduction injections to makes the lip more visible
Our doctors place small amounts in specific points around the area above your top lip to relax muscle tension. By relaxing these muscles, it allows more of the lip to show, making them appear fuller without filler!
Lip flip results last for 2 to 4 months, on average.
TL;DR: A lip flip makes your lips look fuller without actually adding any volume, for up to 4 months.
How do I get natural looking lip filler results and avoid overfilled lips?
We customise our treatment plans for each individual based on their unique facial aesthetic. At STORY we always adapt our approach depending on your gender, ethnicity and goals.
Therefore, every treatment is always bespoke and requires a full facial assessment beforehand.
During this consultation we consider the lips in the context of the lower face and face as a whole.
We also get to know your ideas, concerns and expectations so we can make a plan you are comfortable with. Small tweaks or not, you are in control.
It’s also important to remember that generally, up to 1ml is used during our lip filler treatments. This is 1/5th of a teaspoon, so it’s a tiny amount. This is why the expertise of the doctor injecting makes all the difference. Knowing where and how much to place in each area can mean the difference between gorgeous, juicy lips and a “trout pout”.
Even if we’re only treating the lips, it’s important to consider the proportions of your face as a whole, so your results are balanced, natural-looking and enhance your features. This, combined with STORY doctors’ wealth of experience and medical aesthetic expertise, is how we avoid overfilled outcomes.
TL;DR: See an experienced, medical professional for any injectables and have a thorough consultation first where you set out what you do – and don’t – want to achieve from your treatment.
Which is best – lip filler or a lip flip?
Again, this depends entirely on your facial structure, proportions and the look you are trying to achieve. In general, these treatments are best suited to the following presentations, however this will always be decided with you during a consultation. You may also wish to have both treatments! There are so many creative possibilities for shaping beautiful, full lips that work in harmony with your face.
Lip filler is best if you want to…
… replace volume loss caused by ageing.
… add extra volume and shape, especially in smaller/thin lips.
… augment the body of your lip(s) – remember, you don’t have to treat both lips!
… create more definition by treating the lip border.
… see more significant, longer-lasting results
… show more lip but cannot have a lip flip as it would affect lip function, if you play a flute, for instance.
… avoid your upper lip looking too long.
A lip flip is best if you want to…
… make thin lips appear fuller without filler.
… have a more “pouty” but natural looking top lip.
… minimise the amount of gum that shows when you smile.
… reduce the amount your lip disappears when you smile
… enjoy subtle results that do not last as long as filler
… try out a change without committing to fillers.
… keep to a smaller budget.
TL;DR: It depends on what you’re looking to achieve and how long for.
