Finding your perfect SPF can be a search akin to seeking out the Holy Grail. Luckily, STORY Southwell aesthetician, Lucy Breen is here to explain what to look for in an SPF for acne prone skin, as well as giving us her recommendations…
Why is SPF important for people with acne?
We all know the general reasons sun protection is important. However, wearing the right SPF is particularly important for acne sufferers. This is because acne flares can be caused or exacerbated by skin inflammation and wearing the proper SPF can help to protect against this. It can also limit the contrast between scar tissue and the surrounding unscarred skin, in cases of acne scarring.
Choosing an SPF for acne prone skin
When choosing an SPF, always opt for a broad spectrum product no lower than SPF 30 – ideally SPF 50 – and wear this daily, in the correct amount, all year round.
Switching to a mineral SPF or some of the newer mineral-chemical hybrid formulation SPFs may help acne prone skin.
Mineral sunscreen tends to have a thicker consistency so always look for those which state they do not give a white cast, especially if you have darker skin. Newer formulations, such as the previously mentioned hybrid versions, tend to be better in this regard.
Wear the right amount of broad spectrum SPF daily
The amount of SPF you use should be the length of two fingers for your face and neck, and a third if your scalp needs covering too, then top-up throughout the day, as necessary.
Using non-comedogenic (non-pore clogging) SPF – and makeup – is wise. However, the term ‘non-comedogenic’ is not regulated so you may find some products marked as such may not help.

STORY recommends… SPF for acne prone skin
Our current favourite STORY-stocked SPF for acne prone skin is the Mesoestetic Melan 130+ Pigment Control SPF 50.
This water resistant, hybrid mineral-chemical formula is beloved by skincare experts, including Caroline Hirons.
Despite its beige tint, this “very high” UVB and UVA sun protection is suitable for all skin tones.
It has actually been designed for people with pigmentation issues in mind – a common issue among acne sufferers. As such, the product’s shade actually helps to soften imperfections in the skin and gives the appearance of a more even skin tone regardless of how dark or pale your skin is.
The patented high-tech formula also includes a depigmenting ingredient which “helps to regulate melanin synthesis by reinforcing the preventative anti-spot action”, according to the brand.
That’s a lot of bang for your buck! If you’d like to order your Mesoestetic sun protection, simply get in touch and we’ll send it out to you.
